Happy Tamil New Year (14.04.2011)


Varusha Pirappu, or Puthandu or Chithirai Vishu, is the Tamil New Year celebrated all around the world by Tamil people. In 2011, Varusha Pirappu or Puthandu date is April 14, 2011. This is the first day in Tamil month of Chithirai masam in Khara year. As per Hinduism (Tamil beliefs), Chithirai Vishu is the day during which Lord Brahma started the creation. Many temples host special pujas during Puthandu in Tamil Nadu. Chithirai Vishu is also known as Chithirai 1 or Chithirai month 1.
Chithirai Masam or Chitirai month is the first month in the traditional Tamil Panchangam which follows the solar calendar. Chithirai masam 2011 starts on April 14 and ends on 14 May 2011. The 1st day of Chitirai month (Chithirai 1) is celebrated as Tamil New Year which is also known as Chithirai Vishu or Puthandu or Varsha Pirapu. Chithirai is considered as highly auspicious month in Tamil Calendar.
Chithirai Thiruvizha or Madurai Chithirai Festival, popularly known as Chithirai Brahmotsavam, in Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple is celebrated during this month. Chithirai Pournami is also an auspicious day in Tamil Nadu.

Chithirai masam coincides with Chaitra month and Vaishakha month in traditional lunar calendars followed in North India, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Chithirai month coincides with Medam month in Malayalam calendar. Next month in Tamil calendar is Vaikasi Masam.
